Number Nine of Organization XIII, Demyx's memories of the time before he was a Nobody are filled with water and music. Then the shadows came and everything changed as Demyx lost something very important to them. His first clear memories as Demyx are of the Organization taking him in.
The Organization treated Demyx rather well. There were pranks and jokes and some violence, but as a whole, life with the Organization wasn't bad. They taught him how to use his powers and control his sitar (the love of his life).
Things went bad when Roxas, the youngest Organization member and good friend of Demyx's, left suddenly. Demyx was sad about the loss, but carried on with his duties in the Organization. That is, until he was sent to bring Roxas back, with force if necessary.
Encountering Sora for the first time, Demyx tried to call Roxas back. When Roxas did not respond well, Demyx fought, as his orders told him to. But he didn't take the fight seriously and soon left, leaving Sora more confused than anything else.
Events in the Organization were escalating and the next time Demyx was sent out, things did not go so well for the water-wielder. He encountered Sora again. When reminded of what he had lost, his heart as he had been told by the Organization, Demyx grew angry and frightened. He attacked Sora with everything he had.
And lost.
Nearly three years later, Demyx returned to life in Twilight Town. Not knowing what had happened to the rest of the Organization, Demyx briefly looked for them (though not too hard). Finding no trace that any of them were alive, he set himself up in Twilight Town to live, listening for hints of other Organization members returning.
